Google has bought Paperofrecord.com. A valuable resource for researchers everywhere it's one of the largest digitized and indexed archives of newspapers.

Maybe sometime in the near future your RSS feed for your favourite paper will go back as far as the 19th century.

Libraries Fear Digital Lock-Down

As the pigs of the modern media cabal race for fatter profits through the most restrictive DRM technologies Librarians and Archivists are reminding us that in a civilized society we still employ Public Libraries to architect and preserve human memories.

Imagine a newspaper from 1886 in digital format locked down with very strong encryption. Now suppose that file format is out of date or not the best system for organizing information? As more media becomes digital we risk locking down materials and essentially turning them to dust far before their time. Thus the one huge advantage of storing things as information is negated: a virtual expiration date is created by copyright.

Fucking brilliant.
