14hr Days

What a day. I know it sounds perhaps a tad trite and arrogant but I hate working with kids. I frequently take abuse from 16-year-olds with unrealistic expectations because that's how they're told to do their job.

Today five people decided not to show up to work. One sick, two no-shows, one arrived drunk and was sent home and one left during his shift. That left me and only me running an entire kitchen for three hours. Four people in total running the entire store.

And yet to be honest it was kinda exciting. I mean I'm fucked up tired now but.. I had some sort of control over the whole situation. And I get a good feeling about working hard and helping people out. I know I was raised with a hyper-active sense of stewartship. During music events etc. I was frequently last to leave. The guy who always stayed behind to wrap things up. Just something I was raised to do.

Without me today the store would have had to close earlier costing big time money. Sure I work for a huge global corporation. But people's livelihoods are involved here. It's quite obvious how poor performance effects me and my co-workers here. It's not a huge urban environment where the effects are dispursed into a huge sea of cheap faceless labour. With poor sales we open less hours. Less store hours means less shift time. All the figures are made public to employees.

I feel good about a hard day's work. But more interestingly I feel excited about being part of a smaller community. Despite having no luxury to be critical of environmental and labour policy I still feel good working for McDonalds. Sure they do lots of fucked up things as a company but that's How Our World Is Right Now. Bitching about it from your university dorm room or parent's basement doesn't do much good. It's nice to be out of a callous and affluent mind set. It really is nice to be away from North America for a while.
