This Good Friday we stopped by a friend's parents house to burn some CD copies of their demo on the way to a party. There next to his Mom was a Defend Marriage pamphlet with post-it notes stuck through the pages. I felt like speaking up to say:

"Mrs. X, I don't mean to be a bother being a guest in your house and all. But I'd just like to humanize the situation for you and remind you that as a young man I aspire to have the same rights as your son. To be able to have my love recognized both culturally and legally, if I so choose."

But the drum roll in my head sputtered, my heart fluttered and I did not lead my life as sometimes I wish I could.
