Junior Boys and Caribou: Hamilton's Best Play
Went out Friday night for a show that was sure to please. Caribou played with the Junior Boys and Russian Futurists. Despite the indieboy hypo the Futurists weren't really too hot. Four guys in a row singing shiny pop songs like The Flaming Lips or Grandaddy on keyboards. Zero crowd interaction and lined up like Kraftwerk. Not bad at all but definitely not great. Should listen to the record first. Sucks they were held up at the border with all their hammer and sickle propaganda.
Junior Boys were glad to be home I think. I believe I was told the first show I saw of theirs was nearly their first live and it was a bit tame. They play over a dub track, which is acceptable and were kinda skittery the first time. This time was much different and Jeremy's guitar work over top is a lot more liberal and interesting. Absolutely soaking in delay and chorus their new stuff sounds like a dark prairie before a storm in August. Can't wait for new material to get released.
Caribou was kinda the same deal as their old stuff (as Manitoba) although with the new material already out on record. Starting with a big explosion, tandem drumming, hip-hop, samples, acoustic break-down, explode and repeat. It's a great formula but definitely starting to feel like one. Still like it lots.
I have some crappy photos of the show up on Flickr.
The feeling at the show was tame crowd wise. I was doing my silly little dance to Birthday and Bellona but the crowd really wasn't having it. The only other guy dancing was a friend of my brother's and a two girls. Stiff! I hate S&M shows, I really really do. However the bands were schmoozing with friends and not really staying hidden in some back room at all. Shook Daniel Snaith of Caribou's hand after the show and went home happy.
