So I think I've figured it out. I haven't been able to stop listening to Echoes by The Rapture since I saw the House of Jealous Lovers back on some music video show in Paris back in October. I mean any two bit indie dork will write them off as a Public Image Ltd. rip-off band.. but! There's more there. The more house music like structure is akin to Technotronic or Utah Saints. The kinda stuff I loved to hear as a kid when only popular grunge was acceptable to listen to.

The mix of post punk tones in techno/house structure is a really engaging whole, at least to my ears. Sampled 8-bit keyboard hits of Technotronic replaced with jarring minimal-but-contrasting post-punk guitar hits. I think mixing genres hap-hazzardly can be really fruitless but this is a sexy hybrid. Like Vanilla Cola not Diet Cola with Lemon.

I wanna hear some of this new Rapture stuff. "House of Jealous Lovers" actually drives me up the wall... The song gets me going, but then the singer goes off and he really grates on me.

Lotsa people are turned off Luke Jenner's Robert/Patti Smith love child voice. It's definitely an acquired taste but I found it to be really a lot of fun once I warmed up to it. The "Shakeshakeshakeshakeshake..." on Out Of The Races And On To The Tracks is one ultra effective dance unit activator.

I mean he could since like another Julian Casablanca instead...

Yeah, that record is good. People that hate on that are just... haters. It's nothing new, like you said, but no one can deny how well crafted and groovy it is.

hi! i saw you post about stars (can't agree with you more about what you said about "heart") on thesteeldonut and i came to check out your journal.

i just wanted to say that i also *LOVE* "echoes." it is so fantastic. it is still on heavy rotation through my stereo, along with the new air and stereolab.
