Feb. 8th, 2004 01:24 amSo I think I've figured it out. I haven't been able to stop listening to Echoes by The Rapture since I saw the House of Jealous Lovers back on some music video show in Paris back in October. I mean any two bit indie dork will write them off as a Public Image Ltd. rip-off band.. but! There's more there. The more house music like structure is akin to Technotronic or Utah Saints. The kinda stuff I loved to hear as a kid when only popular grunge was acceptable to listen to.
The mix of post punk tones in techno/house structure is a really engaging whole, at least to my ears. Sampled 8-bit keyboard hits of Technotronic replaced with jarring minimal-but-contrasting post-punk guitar hits. I think mixing genres hap-hazzardly can be really fruitless but this is a sexy hybrid. Like Vanilla Cola not Diet Cola with Lemon.
