Had HECE rehearsal tonight. It was good to see all those people again. It almost feels like family at times. As for the practice.. well, it's been a long time since we left off in late June and I'm not the only one who's just resumed practicing now. It's not horrible, but definitely not our best. Not everyone was there too, so that degrades things.

I just about destroyed Jen's new viola today. I made some off-hand comment that was somewhat humiliating then slammed my hands down onto my lap. On said lap my bow was sitting. It launched like a missile, right in the direction of Jen next to me, viola in hand. That's a $900 missile towards a multi-thousand dollar target. LUCKILY it missed and brushed her pegs landing on the carpet. But I just about died with embarrassment. Christ, it was like a Wiley Coyote stunt.

hehe ahh... the good old days :-)

I bumped into the 1st Oboe's stand, sending her water and reeds in her lap for convenience of use.

A $900 bow? I refuse to believe poverty exists.

I bought it with the aid of a Kiwanas Music Festival schoolarship and hard earned money. It helps me do what I love most and it's an investment that will grow with time.

That's fine, and it's great that it helps you do what you love. I now simply refuse to believe that there is poverty anywhere in this world when such a thing exists. A bow for $900? Call me a Philistine, unappeciative, or call me practical, but that's like buying a $900 spatula for your BBQ.

I'm sure, however, that I'll get grief from my friends for bringing this up. "That is how much they cost.." and "..if you knew anything about music, you'd know that it would cost that much.." bla bla bla. Next time I see a homeless guy, or a woman lying on the street saying she's about to die and needs food, the multitudes of people lining up to get food for Thanksgiving, I'll be reminded of the $900 stick with catgut.

Somehow I doubt you understand what "hard earned money" really is.

Somehow I think there's a difference between flipping meat and making music.

I could easily point out one hundred things to be a lot more angry about just standing at any intersection in downtown Toronto then when a student of music buys himself some good equipement.

I too would be pessimistic about "the kids today". But I have done a lot of hard work and probably experienced a lot more poverty than most people I know now.
I'd like to ask you, that if you so concerned about poverty and homelessness, what are you doing about the problem?

Living pretty much from paycheque to paycheque, I'm practically living it. Dipping into small, dwindling RSPs to pay for food, rent, etc. I'm not out on the street, nor am I proud to be the owner of a $900 stick!

Let's see if the student of music changes his tune when he's up to his tits in debt from his "education" and that $900 stick would easily pay his rent..

Bah! Can you guess how many Indonesian mothers it took to make your baseball cap? Don't forget to add in the 12 hours a day they had to work to earn their $3. Woohoo!

None - their kids made it. Rather nicely I might add too.
