From Fiction was a bit of a disappointment. Maybe their recordings are fun. But live they were just too spastic to really enjoy. Nouveau progressive rock smear-emo or something. Just like the Mars Volta they kinda fizzle in their attempt to sound harder than hard and deeper than deep. It's not profound just because nobody can understand what you're trying to communicate. Or deep because you're sweating and crying in front of a microphone. That's just stylized shallowness.

This is unfortunately pretty standard in modern rock music these days. Like snorkelling in three inches of guitar fuzz while some white kid from the suburbs goes on about some trite egomaniacal shit. Or in the case of this new generation of kids aping prog-rock they rip pages out of the Becktionary without, you know, actually knowing what the words mean. Maybe there's merit in that but I don't think it's intentional.

Just a first impression though. From Fiction's records might totally have merit. Their bass player was really good at fiercing the big blonde white boy 'fro.

Now I must heartily endorse Camouflage Nights. Blazing tomahawks, harmonium, cow bells and catchy tunes. A bit of a jam-band feel in that modern "collective" sense that works so well for groups like Broken Social Scene. Now this is entertainment. I didn't see their 12" at the merch table.. for shame. Also one of the members is ex of the late and great Thrush Hermit. The same weekend Joel Plaskette played too.

Oh right so I came to see Death From Above. They totally were what I expected. I mean it's straight up cock rock with a bit of disco flair. I was surprised how much of the music was played on some really perverted Nord patches rather than bass. Which, as a former IDM geek, totally wet my whistle for the band even more.
