Usually the darker porters and stouts make good cooking beers. Especially if you are steaming or braising. Maily because of the complex flavours they have.
A good combination is Pete's Maple Porter (which they don't seem to make any more - rats) but it was awesome to cook some sausuages with and once they were cooked, you can reduce the liquid a bit and make a nice sauce.
I've already discovered the joys of cooking with beer! I love steaming hotdogs, kielbasca, etc in beer - and just recently tried cooking a corned beef brisket in a pressure cooker with beer and man-o-man - it was deeeeelicious! Not to mention you get that smell of cooking beer all thru the house! LOL!
Try some of the sweet flavored beers out there for cooking, too! Cherry wheat was a great cooking experiment!
Just open the bottle, shove the bottle up the bird, set it upright on the bbq, and cook at 350ºF (177ºC), and of course, glaze over with a nice thin honey coat for an extra dash of sweetness.
