Trojan horses on the rise
Jan. 21st, 2002 06:13 pmEveryone using a modern browser ought to check themselves for parasites. A friend had some installed on ie5.5 on winme, it dragged his performance into the ground.. not that winme wasn't doing that already.

Date: 2002-01-21 03:29 pm (UTC)Two other things you can do:
- Check your startup items. There's a small control panel from
http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml that works well. What each item is is described here http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_pages/startup_full.htm
- Block entries in your DNS hosts file. This is a text file (open it in Notepad) that maps names to IP addresses. Add names that you just don't want your computer to go to. For example, I added the following:
208.176.12.74 ads.x10.com
208.176.12.74 ad.doubleclick.net
208.176.12.74 media.fastclick.net
208.176.12.74 global.msads.net
208.176.12.74 ad.iwin.com
And now I see happy marmots instead of silly ads for X10 crotchcams--and don't worry about nasty tracking cookies from doubleclick.
Thanks for the link!
