I enjoy chickory essence coffee, I do. Reminds me of something in my childhood that I can't quite put my finger on.

Perhaps, but the small bottle of Camp cost me $9 for crying out loud.

Apparently it makes a good seasoning in coffee cake.

Aha, got it. I'm more used to chicory being used as a stretcher for coffee - in Switzerland, it was sold cheaply in bags as dried chicory root, in the French tradition, so that you could get more out of a pound of relatively highly taxed coffee.

In these parts, the French tradition lives on through Vietnamese grocery stores, several of which sell either Café du Monde or French Market coffee-cut-with-chicory in cans.

With regard to coffee I have crossed that fine line between "enthusiast" and "slavish addict".

Last night, I was just generally out of it. I didn't get to bed until nearly 2 the night before and I was just zoning. The last thing I do before retiring to the bedroom to fiddle with my radios and/or Live Journal is to set up the coffee maker.

Last night, I forgot one important feature. The filter.

I did not notice. I did not notice when I drank the resulting coffee. I only realized there was a problem when I noticed that some coffee had barfed onto the counter when it backed up a bit upon brewing.

So much for my coffee credentials.

We'll see what the coffee tribunal has to say about that!

I have fond memories of New Orleans when I drink coffee with chickory. I remember sitting at Cafe du Monde and drinking several cups of it and eating beignets (French donuts smothered with powdered sugar) during a wonderfully loud and rainy thunderstorm.

I have a few extra cans of the stuff lying around. When I find a box and have a few dollars, I will send you a couple of cans of their coffee.

You're too kind! I'll have to find something to reciprocate with.

Chickory coffee always kind of freaked me out because I kept thinking "hickory"... that it would taste like BBQ potato chips or something.
