The computer show stunk. No new iMac, lameness all around. Intel 440VX motherboards and copies of MS Visual J++ sorta uselessness. The only things to catch my eye were new 733mhz/128mb/30gb ATA G4 Power Macs for $2000, the 14.1" iBook which is pretty snazzy and highly comparable to the TiBook now and old Sun Sparcstation 20's which would be nice only as period pieces.
Didn't actually buy anything though, the prices weren't that impressive and frankly I don't want to buy any more OEM parts. 'Specially OEM reference design video cards based on nVidia chipsets. I speak from personal and inter-personal experience when I say that they're pretty unreliable and prone to stability and failure in the long run. As for retail versions, I suppose they likely have better longevity.
I still sustain that I want to make coffee and/or end tables out of NeXT cubes. I think it would be cool to theme a room out of old formerly high technology gear to show that the aesthetic of the design has a longevity that out lives the technology. Sort of a "in defence of design" statement. I believe it could be tastefully done. It's all part of my minimal utilitarian bachelor homo-pad of the future™! Not like I'll actually do it, but hey, that's one of the purposes of this journal. To write down a fantasy or two. No matter how explosively gay or geeky.
