Like a giant dildo crushing the sun.

His pre-"Odelay" days are best. There's still that stoned slacker folk vibe coming on stronger than the hip-hop thing. Pay No Mind's guitars are tuned down about a half-step too, although the chords are rudimentary.
Of course Beck is now a total formula, albeit a fantastic one. Take classic blues/jazz/folk riffs and throw 'em against hip-hop production techniques. A distorted drum loop funking around in an Akai or a rudimentarily scratched motown record against some Clapton-esque rock. Adlib Janis Joplin screetches, spoon percussion and ambient noises.
Bingo, ultimate kitsch.
Good fun.

But my fav pre-Odelay Beck tune is probably Satan Gave Me A Taco. That song is FUNNY! Oh my god.
