Love for TRON

Ian and Martin came over today. We played much Gauntlet and watched TRON: The 20th Anniversary Edition. Damn it was good! Something about the whole design aesthetic really turns me on, all that modern/brutal stuff EVERYWHERE. I think I'm supposed to hate TRON on some sort of principal... but I don't.

As much as the film has some glaring plot holes and a pretty lame motivation (here's a wink for you Greg) I still find my nostalgia for it pretty intense. Jeff Bridges has got totally old since then, damn. Twenty years'll do that to ya I suppose.

An interesting thing about Tron, when they went to re-master it, they had big problems, since there was not much money left in post production, the camera negative was used to strike the first 200 or so release prints, meaning there is not a single well-kept element of the film in existence today. For that 20th anniversary edition, they had to basically re-create many scenes digitally.

I remember playing "Tron" as a video game. You had a choice of 4 different games adapted from the movie and when you've conquered all 4 games, you go up a level. I spent a lot of time (and quarters) on that game.

What is still interesting to me is that "Tron" was one of Disney's bigger flops that has gradually developed into a cult following with special effects that was way ahead of it's time.
