I think I deserve a good viola.
All those rich kids I've met in various youth orchestras have wicked instruments and don't work half as hard as I do. Trust me, I've been in master classes and rehearsals with them. The thing has NO response on fast passages, the attack is just so crunchy and muffled. I mean, sure my playing could improve but it's really hard to do when your working with CRAP. A real catch-22 sorta situation. And let's not even talk about projection, I'm suprised anybody can ever hear me play in an ensemble.
Lemme tell you the story of my present viola, if I haven't already. It was really a godsend really, understand my social situation. I've been involved in classical music (read: rich man's game) for just over a decade (that's 1/2 my life). I'm from a unsupported single mother family of three. About three years into playing I started private lessons which really put a stress on us financially. But it was my absolute reason for being and continues to be once again now that the three years from hell seem to be coming to a close..
Back on track.
When I started playing private with Ilona Spleit (
jenneferre's Mom) I wanted nothing more than my own viola. So I'd scour the "Musical Instruments" heading in the local paper on a daily basis. I was 12-years-old at the time and had no idea what goes into buying a good string instrument. Now, as you might imagine, it's not often that a viola comes up from sale at all let alone in the classified section of a newpaper. But it happened and the man selling them wanted a paltry $300. Long story short, Mom bought me the instrument that I still play today as I plan on studying music and consider it as a career.
It was great when I was just learning and getting better.. now a new instrument is totally over-due. I mean, I don't regret my recent history, it's put me in a good headspace now but it certainly wasn't a time of great achievement. Fuck, I'm willing to sell my computer for a viola now. I really am. Computers are cheap and deterioriate as investiments. Instruments, as a rule, are great equity.
I so deserver a schoolarship. And a new viola. YEAH. And a sports car!

Date: 2002-05-09 07:37 pm (UTC)A) get a job (slow and steady always wins the race)
B) sell stuff (believe it or not human organs net you way less on the black market than you'd think. Still, beggars can't be too choosy.)
C) ask people like yo-moms to contribute to the Brodie Needs A Bangin Ass Viola Fund instead of giving you birthday/christmas presents.
Givin that you currently live in a rent free environment the job will get you the most money but even with all three combined I bet you'll need to do a LOT of penny pinching to get to 5 G's in under two years.
