So I've trying to grow a beard. Yup, that's my quest. See here's my logic:

I think beards are hot therefore I should have one myself. Make sense? I think so too, mostly.

Now what I need is tips, I mean I'm sure I have the right audience. How does one effectively trim this sucker? Does it need to be combed, conditioned or shampooed?

Help!

Beards > all

I have a really crappy beard that I shampoo daily along with what little hair I have left on the top of my head. It gets brushed. I have a very nice beard trimmer and I use it to saw off the wild hairs, of which there are many more than I care to discuss.

See my lj user pic. I tend to let them grow all bushy and I only trim them like 2-3 times a year. I do use Paul Mitchell tea tree shampoo and I do use a brush for my beard. It is a wide, square deal made of wood... they can be found at most upscale beauty salon.

Don't be afraid to experiment with the shape of your beard. Find a style that works with your face and beard growth.

I really like the short friendly mutton chops I sport. I don't actually shave my chin, but just trim it down with a #1. I like the multi-layered effect I've achieved.

I don't shampoo my beard, I just use the plain old soap I use on the rest of my body.

I've heard that using butch wax works on taming wild hairs.

madge, i soaked in it!

How does one effectively trim this sucker?

Beard trimmer, clippers, or scissors (in that order of preference.) When buying myself a beard trimmer, I had to look a bit harder to find what I wanted: a beard trimmer that let me clean up my beard and still keep it bushy (B5-ish on the bearcode scale). Most trimmers take you down to B3 or less, which was not for me.

Does it need to be combed, conditioned or shampooed?

Once at IBR, I found myself on the Muni with a group of bears I'd just met. In particular, a certain handsome and semi-well-known fellow who's appeared in many a Lynn Ludwig photo spread. I noticed this gent had an unusually soft beard, so I screwed up my courage and asked for his ursine beauty secrets. He said: use shampoo on your beard and scrub real hard. He reasoned that scrubbing would weaken the natural stiffness of the beard hairs. I tried it myself and noticed very little improvement. Then again my beard wasn't that coarse to begin with.

Oh... sorry for the ramble. Uh... yeah, definitely shampoo that sucker. In fact, you should use Pantene. Why? Because you're still the prettiest. And we promise we won't hate you because you're beautiful.

But you're already hot, if you grow a beard you'll be unstoppable :)

I've used the same Remington beard trimmer since I first grew a beard.

Brush it.

Shampoo it like your hair. Condition it.

When it's not feeling soft, I put one of those "leave-in" conditioners through it. The current one is from Schwatzkopf, but that's just what looked okay in the supermarket. I think it conditions much better than the standard conditioners.

Still, I'm a doctor, and not a beauty therapist, so I'm hardly qualified to give this sort of advice.

Let me add a small comment re conditioners. You may have to experiment a bit. I forget the brand, but I was using one that although it did a nice job keeping my fur soft, easy to manage, and kissy sweet, also imparted an unpleasant flavor to everything I ate. Why? Because your sense of smell has a lot to do with how things taste. This conditioner made everything taste like it was overlayed with cigarette smoke of all things.

On my facefur I use just plain old White Rain Classic Care conditioner, available in finer K-Marts and Targéts everywhere. Has an interesting appearance and texture, too! :-{)}

I'm amazed myself what a few trims have done; when I went to get my hair cut, I asked for a beard trim, and somehow, it's managed to come out well so far. I need to post a pic sometime.

My secrets for a beard:

*Throw out your razor. :X) Maybe once a month, I use a disposeable one to hit my upper cheek bones, then use scissors to clean the moustache.

*Get it trimmed two or three times a year-- when it starts to become a food bib. :X)

*I've noticed no difference between regular shampoos and the shi-shi brands. The Pantene that I use on my hair (since I've tried taking care of it ever since I grew it out) works no better than the Suave (I prefer the vanilla scent) brand-- so far as beards go.

*Give it a good brushing every morning. Because my beard hairs are so kinky, my beard always looks larger after a brushing. :X)

I've not tried any of it, but I found this last year. Maybe someone else has tried it and can offer some info, but I thought it was cool that this was available.

I bought the complete set of Beardsley (4 flavors of shampoo and the vanilla conditioner). Supposedly, they are pH balanced for beard hair and are better than regular shampoos. I'm not sure about that. Sometimes it feels to me like the their shampoo is stripping my hair the way soap does. To me, the big selling point is the flavors. Black Currant, Ginger, Vanilla. (Oh, and their original flavor which is OK, but nothing so good as the rest).

But I've also used pert plus and the Clairol herbal essences (the ones where the ladies have orgasms while shampooing in the commercials). Experiment. Your beard is hair and deserves pampering just like the hair on top of your head (unless of course you buzz that off). If you have brillo-beard, use a conditioner and see if that softens things up. The same can also be said for pubes.

I just use soap and trim it with a shitty trimmer I got from wal-mart for 12 bucks.
