well before i post a comment, i think it's only right i introduce myself...name's Gus :-)
i think that over time, individuality has lost its steam...nowadays everybody feels the necessity to be part of the "status quo". people are flat out afraid of being different which in turn would have them feel left out socially, politically, sexually, and so on.
we no longer embrace our differences...instead we cast them aside and/or hide them in some sort of way, and thats bullshit. i'd be lying if i said i haven't tried what was stated in the last sentence...but i guess everyone has been effected to some extent, no matter who you are...
First of all, don't apologise for a long post. Secondly geeez you're cute. Judging by the 100x100px user pic alone.
Anyhoot, blatant flirting aside (*school girl giggle*) I would suggest that people are generally drawn towards each other. Individuality is a really pluralistic sorta thing, there's so much to it. Ultimately everybody's an original whether they want to be or not, that's impossible to avoid. It's not the individual that's missing but the tolerance of people in general.
More than anything it's intolerance that mutes people and culture in whole. So, back to the quote, the two combined I think make people feel better about being around each other :)
"Do not wish to be anything but what you are, and try to be that perfectly."
Great. You've just given every piece of aberrant humanity on earth an excuse to continue harassing me on the train. Let's take that fundamentally sweet quote and make it functional as well:
"Do not wish to be anything but what you are--unless you smell bad, bum money for crack, are illiterate, practice a religion that requires you to aggressively panhandle it to me as I walk through Five Points, belong to a special interest group, or talk on your cell phone while driving. If you do any of those things, you should pretend to be someone else right away."
Now...
