The older I get and look at my family the more I think I clearly understand my roots.

Having grown up in west Hamilton near the university most of my friends have been pretty well-to-do. Most of my friends parents were highly trained professionals. Psychologists, phsyicists and doctors off the top of my head. I remember feeling weird at first, most of my life my mom was an RN and a single Mom.

This weekend I took stock of my family. They're truckers, construction workers, millwrights, roofers and police officers. In the end I think what's been taught to me is the lack of classist behavior. Even an intolerance for it. It's just been a given since I was a little kid. I mean, I'm not trying to make the "yay, go blue/red collar!" cliché. Just an appreciation for the spectrum people I've got to know growing up.

Anyhow, it had me thinking and definitely feeling thankful.

Growing up, I almost instinctively knew what blue collar meant. All my dad's clothes were blue. His work clothes consisted entirely of blue denim jeans and blue workshirts, and he even wore blue Y-front underwear.

There were no rich people at my school, though. There was a kid we picked on for being the rich kid, 'cause we all considered him wealthy, but his dad was just an insurance salesman. I didn't actually meet any rich people until I went to university, and it was quite a shock.

Eh, I just felt like sharing.

What does red collar mean?
