I think it has a lot to do with having grown up in a city that was in economic decline since the 60s.

My ideal future is still a hyper-minimal, brutal, plexiglass and re-enforced concrete paradise. Everywhere you go they're playing either Electro or Disco. There are no cars, only mega-efficient emission free public transit. The national antheme would be composed on a Mini-Moog synthesizer and drum machine. It would have a bold, brave melody designed to reverberate as you stroll down sterile fluorescent lit concrete halls on your way home.

Looking up the central ground level concourse of the sky scrapper to see a light well shooting up 300 stories high, each hallway's balcony lining the well supporting plants providing the internal biosphere with oxygen. Everything is perfectly measured and engineered. Mankind with complete control over his environment.

This is the future I believe in but I feel I've lost the faith. It's so unrealistic and in opposition to the natural world around us. Our physical and psychologcal biology won't have it.

Too bad.

I used to imagine something very similar. Apparently a lot of people did ... I have a "rah rah isn't Hamilton wonderful" book from the seventies Pardon My Lunch Bucket that describes the idyllic Space 1999 future of Hamilton. It's full of funky 70s cheez.

My other fantasy was that the city would be dismantled and returned to forest :)

Wait...

Isn't that Toronto?

And don't argue with me, I've seen Cronenberg's documentaries on the subject, such as the Brood, Crash, and Dead Ringers.
