Stayed in tonight, watched Idle Hands which I'm sure would be thrilling if you were a 16-year-old dope fiend living in the duldrums of the suburbs. Good sound track though noticed some Rob Zombie, Two, BTK (the hip-hop one) and Sir Mix A Lot tracks.

Been reading a lot of the local and national indie rags lately. I'm not sure what it is, maybe the time of year, but there seems to be a glut of new music from new artists lately. But to be honest the signal-to-noise ration of bands seems to be pretty out of wack. Not because there's a lot of crap just because there's a lot material in general and not many established names. I think it's that at this point in time there truly are some different sounds being created and marketed with an audience. People are beginning to move away from boring radio-friendly hip-hop and r&b and even the rock is back is back is back is back trend seems to have fizzled into "Oh, rock just continues to be.. well then.. carry on".

I'm not sure what this flood is due to, probably just my perception as I pay more attention. But I'd also like to postulate that it has a lot to do with the plummetting production costs of great sounding records. I'm sure SA-CD and DVD-A will raise the bar again but it's still an important factor. Definitely not Gutenburgh Press influencial.. more like a highlighter or liquid paper is to the written word.

This week I'm gonna finally pick up a YMCA membership and start working out. I seriously think I'm losing muscle mass due to my rather sedentary lifestyle as of late.

Doing some promo posters for my buddy Matt's art show. He's a really talented illustrator and all around hilarious guy. It's his first exhibit on the 16th which'll be cool I'm sure. He's even invited me to come rock an ambient set all laptop style at the show for a while.. I'm leary about it but it could be my first trial-by-fire as far as performing with that specific instrument is concerned. I invite all the locals (or otherwise) to come by but only with an open mind.

I'm taking care of Martin's bass and learning to play it. It's been about three weeks and although I think I still sound not-so-hot I don't sound terrible on it. Recorded a pretty hot little set of riffs that I'm sure'll end up in a song somewhere along the line. I have this odd propensity towards trying to emulate TB-303 acid basslines which is really pretty humanly impossible on an acoustic instrument. But hey, Tom Morello is quoted as saying that his unique sound comes from trying to emulate a turn table on guitar. Not that I'm even remotely close to competitent let alone technically elite like Tom. Still, it's a fun direction to head in albeit dog paddling in the wadding pool all the way.

Today is one of those days where I can listen to Confield by Autechre and not think only about how crappy it sounds. Actually Confield is a record that really makes me think about music in general. Now I'm not one to be down with convention, infact I think find the majority of actively creative people dis-regard the importance of schools of thought and inheritance of knowledge regarding creative progress. This leads to artsy-fartsy it's-all-good-don't-harsh-my-mellow types with no real opinions or coherrant thoughts.. whom I loathe. But back to Confield, it's a record that is definitely arhythmic and the majority of the record is atonal.. but rhythmically I think it does have structure it's just very detailed and the length of recursion is quite long. The effect is that when you sit and listen for a long time what migh sound to most as fucked up noise actually transforms itself with even the most subliminal amount of attention.

And that's all I have to say about that.

God Damn I love Idle Hands. You're just a fucking philistine. You probably missed all the subtle layers of humor.

Okay maybe you didn't, but that movie still rules.
(Yes, I like trash. I'm not ashamed to admit it.)

Yeah, it was pretty smart. Not really smart but pretty smart. I was expecting less frankly. It's just the "haha we're slackers who smoke pot and look my asthma puffer is really a pipe.. I am so smart and sooo stoned" routine was pretty lame. I only say this because I often party with highschoolers like that and they totally get on my nerves.
