The past and stuff
Jan. 11th, 2003 03:46 pmThis was a fun quiz to recall the past, albeit in a sorta downer way... I've figured out that I'm really too young to remember a lot of this stuff or to have really understood the implications of the events.
- When John F. Kennedy was shot (11/22/1963)
Not alive yet - When Mt. St. Helens blew (5/18/1980)
Two more years 'til I'm born... - When the space shuttle Challenger exploded (1/28/1986)
I was apparently in Kindergarten at the time. I doubt Mrs. Steves was gonna call out "Ok children put down your blocks. There's been a horrible tragedy. The space shuttle has blown up on launch killing the entire crew." There'd be an odd silence of mis-understanding and then one kid starts crying. - When the 7.1 earthquake hit San Francisco (10/7/1989)
My first natural disaster I was actually aware of. My teacher that year was really cool. She was one of those teachers who'd design her own lesson plans all the time and when the earthquake hit shit devoted the next week to learning about plate techtonics and whatnot. - 5. When the Berlin Wall fell (11/7/1989)
I remember Mom explaining the importance of this to my brother and I. What it signified and how good it was for people. Yay Mom! - When the Gulf War began (1/16/1991)
I had a CNN momment with my family, riveted to the sensationalist coverage. Then we decided this was bullshit, turned on CBC Radio 1, got the WHOLE story and I don't think I've trusted CNN since. - When OJ Simpson was chased in his White Bronco (6/17/1994)
I remember getting home from school and watching it on TV. The whole thing really seemed very silly. - When the building in Oklahoma City was bombed (4/19/1995)
I was in the 8th grade. We probably made jokes about it. - When Princess Di was killed (8/31/1997)
I was at music camp sticking flutes up my pussy (haha, I cut you off at the pass!) until about five days later. When I got home it was like being in another world, I really had no idea it was going on. I kinda felt it was a pretty exaggerated affair but a sad happening none-the-less. - When Bush was first announced President (11/7/2000)
I don't think I was anywhere particularly important. - When the 6.8 earthquake hit Nisqually, WA (2/28/2001)
Ok, I really don't remember this... - When terrorists knocked over the World Trade Center (9/11/2001)
I was having breakfast in front of the TV getting ready for my first rehearsal with the HPO (Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra) as a guest student to play Elgar's Enigma Variations at the back of the Viola section. Needless to say the tone of the rehearsal was pretty unusual that day. Unfortunately a great deal of the material I was to play got cut to make space in the programme for some respectful pieces. Every time I hear Nimrod I'm reminded of 9/11 quite vividly.
