I was just watching a speech, and I can say without a shadow of a doubt that George W. Bush defines everything the world hates about Americans.

WOW!

I wrote, in a private log, explaining my view of America... and you pretty well just hit the nail on the head. :D

In short:
I’m not nearly as anti-American as I come across. What really pisses me off is:
- How the American government is fucking over the American people.
- How the American media tends to appeal to the lowest common denominator
- How the American people are apathetic to various issues within the federal government.
- How US centric the government and some of the people are. Hello, there is a world outside of the US and US interests!
Despite this, I’ve always enjoyed traveling to various places in the States and really do think the country is beautiful in various places.

Very well put...

and that does not make you a "bad" American

Helps that I'm not American at all. :) Dual Canadian-Brit. :D

I have a habit of making statements that are rather anti-American, when really it's more a frustration of certain products of American culture, and policy.

speaking of Ameri-centricity (grammarians may sue me now), i recently did a project that involved comparing a US nightly world news program (ABC World News Tonight) to a BBC World broadcast.

ABC News - 17 min on US, 2 min on the rest of the world (which apparently consists of only Iraq, North Korea, and South Korea)
BBC News - 20 min on non-US world (including Russia, France, Ecuador...), 5 min on US

so which deserves the title of "World News"?

We had an exchange student from the Netherlands in high school, and he was shocked to see how little of the rest of the world was covered in major newspapers and television newscasts. I still remember his face when he had an exchange with a history professor of mine ...

"So ... where can I find, well, news about, well, other countries?"
"Right here. ::turns newspaper to a two-page insert in the paper::

When it comes to news from Africa, it's the BBC hands down. The only time the U.S. networks have reported news from Africa is when it's a tragic event or when the event has a direct effect on people in the U.S.

I have not paid enough attention comparing BBC News with CNN (or CNN's sister network CNN International).

I believe it has a lot to do with the so-called "meetings" the anchor and producers have before the newscasts when they decide what to include in a 22 minute newscast (+ 6 minutes for commercials).

To be technically correct, the American public voted for Gore but Bush was put into office by the electoral college instead. America is not a democratic country, it's a representative goverment.

fine...
how is this...

may enough of the american people in the correct places vote such that the electoral college votes him out of office

It's frightening

to hear GWB talk of "loathing" Kim Jong-il and being "sick and tired of games and deceptions" that Iraq keeps playing.

Each time I hear him speak it seems more akin to a Texas redneck with his finger on the trigger of a shotgun pointed at the boy who got his daughter pregnant, than the proper approach the President of the United States should take to find a sane, and peaceful resolution.

As the bumper sticker says, "Don't blame me... I voted for Gore!"

All of you are right. And thank God that I'm an American with a brain - that sees what's going on below all the surface crap.

Ya know, there's some bumper stickers that *aren't* selling in Florida. They say "Blame me--I voted for Nader instead of Gore!"

I hear there's a good 97000 of these bumper stickers sitting in a warehouse in Tampa.

That's exactly why I didn't vote for Nader - I think he would have been a great president, but I didn't feel that he had a realistic chance for winning - so I chose Gore instead. Of course, perhaps Nader could have won if everyone like me had taken the chance to "vote our conscience" and vote for him instead.

/sigh... it's such a friggin' game...

Don't Blame Me, I Didn't Vote!

I was so dissatisfied with the choices for president in 2000, I chose not to vote in that election. I thought Bore ..er Gore was not worthy of becoming president and I believe Gush ...er Bush is not worthy of continuing as president (his handling of 9/11 notwithstanding).

I do believe that the president's staff is just as important as whom the Electoral College votes for president. They are the people who provide the president whatever information he needs at that time.

Also, who the hell would be stupid and rich enough to even want to be president? It's a stressful roller-coaster ride. Trying to deal with your White House staff, the press, the opposing politicians, the public and the international community. If he drops a pin, everybody wants to know the reason why he dropped that pin.

And I just finished watching Joe Lieberman being interviewed by John Stewart on the Daily Show... and was absolutely amazed and impressed. He was intelligent, warm , decent, and even funny (it is a comedy show, after all). Lieberman thought on his feet, deftly tossed back the curveballs that John Stewart threw (like a suggestion to deal with Iraq and North Korea... just bomb Belgium to get really crazy!), and just showed a good grasp on how to deal with things.

Damn it, why is the world stuck with the B-team in the White House?

He's just so awful. A proven idiot, a known sycophant, a huypocrite, a horrible speaker and an uninspiring presence.

While he is a total embarassment I would like to say shame on anyone who actually believe he represents the views of the massive number Americans who knew better, voted and were flagrantly fucked over

Oh, it's got nothing to do with blame. It has a lot to do with the most powerful nation in the world having a democratic breakdown.

I'm sure next election will be very telling.

I also agree with the democratic breakdown part, and I'm also sure the next election will be very telling. I just hope we don't have a fiasco like we did with the last election. Now that was a joke there.
