I find myself not buyin CDs anymore, at least infrequently. The last CD I bought was the New Deal's Live Double set.

What I find is that I download the mp3s for a record, see if I like it then buy the vinyl. Maybe this is short-sighted but it allows me to have a more substancial product. This also works well for me personally because most of my favourite artists are in the electronic/hiphop realm and have long traditions of releasing 12" records. Heck, even punk and hardcore/metal bands are starting to release more vinyl these days and on a larger scale.

It's probably not massive-consumption viable but for me the vinyl/mp3 combo works exceptionally well given my lifestyle. I'm sure I'm not alone here.

Are there that many groups still recording on vinyl? I remember seeing it now and then, but it seemed the exception rather than the rule ...

You can get pop records imported on vinyl but they're expensive. It's still the exception although there's a bit of a retro romance going on with records right now. I think people want something tangible when they play music rather than clicking through menus and pressing buttons. Not as a replacement, just as a compliment.

I listen to a lot of electronic ("techno") and hiphop ("rap") which has a lot of DJ culture around it. Meaning those artists have always produced vinyl records.
