There's nothing sexier than a guy describing how his now ex-boyfriend recently committed suicide due to an untreated bi-polar disorder and then asking you to come have sex with him. There's a few reasons this sets off the Freak Radar:
  1. It might not be true. Compassion is honourable but naïvety is just risky.
  2. Who the hell strikes up conversation talking about DEAD BOYFRIENDS?! Talk about MORBID.
  3. How do sustain an intimate relationship with somebody and not figure out they might be a little down, let alone bi-polar?
My guess is that this dude is actually projecting and the boyfriend is just an effigy. Colour me a skeptic, but hey that's how you learn to get along in this world. Now conversely I met an intelligent man who's into comics can keep up witty dialog even on that shitty gay.com client and likes geeky guys! Doesn't hurt that he's dashingly handsome. It becomes more apparent to me as time goes on that I'm probably only going to sustain any sort of LTR with a geeky or nerdy type.

So it all works out in the end.

i sorta misread the first paragraph and it came out a bit necrophilic...

my boyfriend just committed suicide, would you like to come fuck him?

haha! i am always amazed by how gay men love to play the whole "my drama is worse than your drama". that's so fucking funny. i only wish i could have seen his reaction when you were all like "freak!" haha

At least you're smart enough to recognize these behaviors rather than actually going over there and fucking this person...I'm sure you wouldn't have been the first if you had :P

Good track to be listening to, btw.

Yeah, we loves us some Flaming Lips!

I have finely honed Freak Radar Skills which came not without some very sketchy situations in the past.

It is, in fact, all about the geek.love.

Just HOW does one get on that topic?!

"So, I really like cute cubs like yourself. My boyfriend was bipolar and killed himself. Wanna fuck?"

I've heard some pretty low lines in my three years on the scene, and i think that one takes the case.

Of course my ex-leach used the "I just moved here and I'm living with a friend in a slum, can i stay with you" line to get into my life. So i'm a bit gullible, or was.

And by the way, geek chic is S-E-X-X-Y! Its all about the brain power!!!

oooh baby!

talk to me about IP routers!

i was in the electronica section of a record store and say a 3" CD titled You Show Me Your USB, I'll Show You My FireWire (or something along those lines). the artwork was a crotch shot on each side, the organs replaced with their respective interfaces.

I did an illustration on a mix CD I made with the USB and Firewire logos making love. The USB symbol is so obviously phallic and the Firewire logo looks like a receptive orifice.

I wish I could have such freaky discussions during my chat time. I usually end up talking about food and mobile phones.

About the geeky boyfriend... man, we're rare. There should be a commune.

What people say

What I've found in my online chats is that most people tend to divulge more about themselves than they normally would face to face. I've often thought that the reason for this is the social disconnect that is inherent with online communication. Because communication is more than just words, things like facial expressions, vocal intonation and physical gestures are just as important to get convey as the words and sentences typed into a keyboard and scattered across the screen. Yes there are icons like in LJ or the usual :) :( but they are token at best and are not always appropriate to the sentiment of the author. Although I would like to see online communication develop beyond this limitation, I truly feel that the sense of isolation derived from being in a room with a computer by yourself takes over and the person on other end could almost be imaginary therefore making it easy to divulge so much.

All that being said however, I do think this person's comments were inappropriate or "freaky" to use your term. And it is obvious that there is more going on than he would care to admit to himself much less anyone else. Based on what you've typed here, I think your observations on this individual are valid.

It is totally appropriate to approach people with a skeptical eye. Because even the cute, nice guys who seem intelligent and really into us can be as freaky as the worst of them.

Very excellent points, reality is a far more detailed place. The internet is a unqiue mass-medium and just like it's predecessors it requires awareness of it's strengths and faults to be most effectively used. Considering that everyone on the internet potentially (but not really) has the same voice you're represented with not just biases from all angles not just those represented by the powerful.

Ok, so without getting too tangental what I'm trying to point out is that the only way to be savvy with people on the internet is to be extremely skeptical and make judgements only on hard empirical evidence. For instance I've noticed that for every scientific study on a given prescription drug there are far more unqualified opinions or snake oil sales men with "natural homeopathic remedies". The same goes for inter-personal relations, maybe even more so as I think most people would agree that flirting, love and dating are all out WAR ;)
