don't know about the Hamilton punk scene, but here in South Brunswick, irony, post-irony, anti-irony, whatever aren't big. everything's direct, up-front, clear, honest.
if these punks are the same, i say it's obliviousness or perhaps poseurdom, what with punk being, like, totally kewl now, right?
The 70s was *hell* for me, it almost killed me in a number of unpleasant ways. But retro-70s was OK, mostly people only revived the fun stuff, and there was a lot of that, I just didn't get any of it at the time. Maybe we'll get all the fun stuff about the 80s back too?
What about the "political statement about Canadian pride" option? That's why I always wear my Suge Knight tube top in public. I want to support the local artists residing in the LA area.
Punk (as a genre, mind you) never died, it just grew impotent?
Works for me.
As far as "punk" in the secondary sense (a DIY ethos, a disdain for authority, living within one's immediate means)-- it's alive and well. Along with all of the records that brought it into being.

There are waaay too many people who seem to think that punk ended with either the 70's or Kurt Cobain. Bleh.
