Hmm, punkrawk kids wearing Avril Lavigne hoodies. Post-ironic statement or tragic obliviousness?

Discuss.

lol.

Sorry, I get a little touchy when I hear that particular comment.

There are waaay too many people who seem to think that punk ended with either the 70's or Kurt Cobain. Bleh.

All I know is RnRHS would not be what most people would call the high point of the punk movement.

Well, if not a high point, certainly an amusing one.

don't know about the Hamilton punk scene, but here in South Brunswick, irony, post-irony, anti-irony, whatever aren't big. everything's direct, up-front, clear, honest.

if these punks are the same, i say it's obliviousness or perhaps poseurdom, what with punk being, like, totally kewl now, right?

I was born in 1969. I started buying music in the 1980's, haven't stopped. And, I do not know what to call this present decade.

I believe the only way to know for sure is to ask them a valid PunkRawk™ question - for example, Who is Aaron Cometbus?

You should read some Cometbus. Not a lot, just a little.

At least they're retroing "punk" and not "80s yuppie".

Oh don't worry, I've seen the rich ones do coke too. They forgot to retro-ize the whole straight-edge thing.

Date: 2003-06-03 08:29 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] bitterlawngnome.livejournal.com
Yeah, but coke isn't the rich kids' drug that it was in the 80s, it's downright cheap in comparison now.

God, retro-Yuppie? Ewww.

We were at Amato's ... a guy walked in wearing a black shirt, pink shiny skinny tie loosened, flappy "Don Johnson" jacket.

Uh-oh.

*gasp*

Nooooo! Isn't it bad enough that we've already had to re-live the 70s? I actually kind of liked the 70s ...

The 70s was *hell* for me, it almost killed me in a number of unpleasant ways. But retro-70s was OK, mostly people only revived the fun stuff, and there was a lot of that, I just didn't get any of it at the time. Maybe we'll get all the fun stuff about the 80s back too?

Although retro-Yuppie still makes me say ewww.

I suppose to deny it would be to admit it.

Tragic Obliviousness to fashion.

first it's the punk genre that is being "brought back"....it's going hand in hand with the new waver look that I've seen out in the clubs....

but in a few years time it will be big hair, pastels and women will be dressing like bimbettes from "miami vice".

I've already seen the polo rugby's with the collar's turned up....and I'm cringing.

ACK!

What about the "political statement about Canadian pride" option? That's why I always wear my Suge Knight tube top in public. I want to support the local artists residing in the LA area.

How about this:

Punk (as a genre, mind you) never died, it just grew impotent?

Works for me.

As far as "punk" in the secondary sense (a DIY ethos, a disdain for authority, living within one's immediate means)-- it's alive and well. Along with all of the records that brought it into being.

And another thing.....
