Here's some flouncy pop psychology explaining my dream I posted this morning.

Flood - Because water is a universal symbol from the unconscious, a flood dream can indicate being overwhelemed by unconscious material, such as repressed emotions. It can also represent a feeling of being overwhelmed by circumstances in one's life. Floods are related to initiation, in the sense that they can symbolize the destruction or washing away of the old in preparation for something new. Finally, a flood, as the bursting forth of fluids, can be a sexual symbol.

Murder - Murder symbolizes aggression and rpressed rage at self or others. If the dreamer is murdered, the release of obstacles in one's life or a major transformation may be indicated

Fish/Fishing - Large bodies of water often symbolize the unconscious, so any sea creature can represent a message from the unconscious or "diving" into the unconscious. Completely at home in the ocnea, fish are the best-equipped creatures from exploring its depths, and are thus positive symbols for anyone engaged in therapy or self transformation. The activity of fishing can indicate a quest, particularly for nourishment [hmm, I am hungry...], and it can indicate an exploration of the unconscious [yes, yes the unconscious]. Fish can also be sexual symbols and, because of their association with Christianity, can be Christ symbols.

I had a co-worker with some background in neurology that insisted that dreams were just sort of clearing of write-back cache or something. Moving memories from a faster, temporary chemical medium to more permanent neurons. Though who knows if I am remembering that right or if he even knew what he was talking about.

there are a few theories of dreams - the one you mention above, where things are "replayed" into memory is one. other theories suggests random, directionless firing of neurons which is translated into something more ordered, an unconscious wish-fulfillment, a communication of unconscious desires, an "unlearning" of excess information gained throughout the day, and probably more that i don't remember at the moment.

Large bodies of Water is the symbol of fear/unknown...and a flood can indicate an urgent need to wash away/cleanse the soul OR the self image...depending on the persepctive.... (if you see yourself in the dream or the dream is being seen throuh your eyes...seeing yourself-indicates your self conscience effecting the dream, and the later indicates the sub-conscience repairing or manifesting itself for you to do the work.
