The truth isn't always nice. I thought it was kind of shady for Microsoft to set it up so if you don't allow MSN/Windows Messenger to connect to the internet after installing Windows XP, it won't allow IE to connect either.
And this new version of MSN Messenger has an annoying pause while typing that I don't get under Trillian Pro. Microsoft can produce some cool and useful software, but they can also crank out some buggy stuff.
Come again? You don't need to run MSN or Windows Messenger to connect to the Internet using IE. If you don't want to use Messenger, you don't have to. In Tools | Options [in Messenger], go to the General pane, and deselect the Automatically run Messenger when I log on to Windows option.
Are you seeing the pauses in the upgrade of MSN Messenger 6 that was released today?
And yes, you have to allow MSN/Windows Messenger to connect to the net once before running IE for the first time or you can't connect to the net. I set my firewall to block MSN/Windows Messenger and when I started IE after the inital install, it gave me the lave "Can not connect to server right now." After several attempts to correct the problem, I allowed Messenger to connect and BOOM!...all of a sudden IE was able to find the web again.
I've been able to reproduce this in another test partition running a multi-boot configuration.
5.0 and I Figured it out for the most part lol. If you tried to install it late last night, there was problems with thier servers. Reinstalled everything today and it works fine.. Just need to make sure Everyones Running WMP 9.0 Also... and Have firewalls like ZA set to Medium..any higher wont connect.
Wow, is it any wonder that so many things need to be opened and running from various MS products for other MS things to operate as well? WMP 9.0, MSN, etc...
I heard WMP 9.0 has some kind of "thing" (okay, my geek vocabular is suffering at 2AM, cut me some slack) that lets MicroSloth keep checks on what sorts of media you've been playing on it and such - kind of reports back to home base and stuff.
"What Personally Identifiable Information Does Windows Media Player for Windows XP Gather?
Windows Media Player for Windows XP collects no Personally Identifiable Information from you. Windows Media Player for Windows XP does not require nor accept any personal data when downloading or when using one of its many features."
I think it's just the attention that most people give MS because of previous bugs and holes in their software. I don't usually pay attention to the mass hysteria, but this whole thread seemed like a funnel for MS bashing at the time.
