Yay, bought a BBQ today! I enjoy the BBQ greatly out in the garden with the birds and bees and whatnot. Been baby sitting a Compaq X1010CA today. Let's play [livejournal.com profile] cpratt and compare it to a 15" powerbook:

Compaq X1010CAApple Powerbook
$1,699.00
$2,228.00
  • 15.4" TFT Display
  • 1280x800 resolution
  • 1.4GHz Centrino
  • 512KB L2 Cache
  • 512MB DDR SDRAM
  • 60GB Ultra ATA/100
  • 8X DVD/24X CD-RW Combo Drive
  • ATI Mobility Radeon 9200
  • 32MB DDR video memory
  • 10/100 Ethernet
  • FireWire 400
  • 802.11b integrated
  • Bluetooth optional
  • S-Video out
  • 15.2-inch TFT Display
  • 1280x854 resolution
  • 867MHz PowerPC G4
  • 1MB L3 cache
  • 512MB SDRAM
  • 60GB Ultra ATA/66
  • Combo Drive
  • ATI Mobility Radeon 9000
  • 64MB DDR video memory
  • Gigabit Ethernet
  • FireWire 400
  • AirPort Card
  • Bluetooth optional
  • DVI & S-Video out

So I get a slower computer with a titanium case? Oh good, gigabit ethernet how useful. The X1010CA is magnesium I believe on the cover and keyboard areas and the rest is plastic with metalic paint. It doesn't really feel cheap at all and having man-handled some TiBooks it feels less "creeky". The design isn't as minimized and it doesn't run OS X as the TiBook but frankly is that worth $529USD to me? Also MegaHertz Myth be damned 1.4GHz with DDR memory is gonna be faster than SDR at a slower clock speed on the processor AND bus. Just perhaps not in Photoshop 6.0

Apple really ought to update this model yesterday 'cause I ain't buying. And I plan on buying before the new year.

OMG — I thought you were going to compare the Powerbook to your new barbeque. Now that would be funny...

I know exactly what you mean. My bosses are macheads and offered to buy me a 15" powerbook, which is amazing and generous of them. However when I look at the stats and what they'll be paying, I can't help but think the money would be better spent on a PC laptop right now.

You're right to wait for Apple to update the 15" powerbook, it has gotten quite old, but there's no G5 model in the workds or anything. the G4 Chips max out at around 1.GHz, so if you're expecting to catch up...and be a GHz size queens, then forget it. I like my macs because they're macs and there's just a different experience in using them. I have, and will pay more for that.

I would wait for the upgrade, though. My guess is that it will hit in the next month or so, before Christmas shopping season.

Barbeques rock!

$529 is a small price to pay to not look like a complete prat.

You could wait for the G5 PowerBook, with its seven fans and individual thermal zones no doubt.

I hear it'll even double as a BBQ grill in a pinch.

yeah..and who knows what the next Powerbook will look the like the way Mac goes through design concepts..they'll probably think it'll be neat to make one that's a perfect sphere so that it won't rest on your desk unless you get the proprietary docking device that costs a gazillion dollars or something.
