nfotxn: (This is the story of a man called Brodie)

Welp, I start my first shift tomorrow. Should be interesting to see how I deal with it. I've been living in my computer toad hole so long that sometimes I wonder if I can still deal with people without feeling like a socially inept alien.

One thing I understand about myself is how mutable my personality is. That is to say I can be ultra outgoing, bags of confidence.. totally extroverted/type-A/in your face elastic firecracker. Almost to the point of being so good at it that I can entertain yet be totally detached at the same time. But the isolation of recent years has worn me down and left me on the outside. It's when those feelings set in that I know my black dog has come again. I feel the world has gone mad most times and sometimes I think it's me who's mad.

Anyhow, I bought a copy of Foucault's "Madness and Civilization" and intend to dive in before bed. I'm hoping it will help me to understand how I fit into the world as a queer and perhaps slightly bipolar human being.

Don't stress too much Brodie....

You'll be there trying to win over customers one at a time, through sincerity, warth, honestly and openness...

And they just want their fries and for you not to screw up their order.

*HUGS*

You have a longer attention span than I. I tried reading Foucault and couldn't get past the first few pages. BOOOOOORING.

I'm not sure if you'll get those answers, but I'm sure it'll bring up tonnes of interesting questions. For the record, Madness and Civilization is not one of Foucault's most accessible pieces. The History of Sexuality: Volume 1 is probably the easiest entry into Foucault's work.

I bet it will be fun to hear things like "Chicken McNuggets" said in a Scottish accent.

...thinking of you...

I'm looking forward to hearing stories about your job! You should bring Fast Food Nation to work and see how that goes over!

By madness, Foucault means his own generalised conception of mental disorder, and by civilization, he means Europe. It's still an interesting study, though, although like the poster above, I found it a bit inaccessible.
