The New Deal, one of my most favourite bands in all of forever, are finally releasing their next studio record titled "Gone, Gone, Gone". For those of you fresh to them the band is not a DJ hiding behind a copy of Logic Audio and some tired old Technics but infact a trio consisting of bass, keys and drums. There are equations to jam bands such as Phish but honestly I find the music much more provocative, engaging and generally contemporary than that stoned noodling.

What I find most interesting about the band is that they use the tried and true method of bootleg trading that jam bands have used for ages. You see their live sets are jammed but they also release studio records that are really polished. The result is a rebirth of that live/recorded duality that most bands in the last decade or so have sought to eliminate. I've never understood paying ticket prices to hear the records you own performed live, so I welcome the trend with open arms. Also bootlegging is probably some of the best promotion you can do for the band. I mean it's essentially the creation of free musical promotional material rather than depending on expensive singles or adding more highly ineffective admat (although eneone does theirs really well) into the already jam-packed mental environments of urban areas or the internet. There are no messy copyright issues if a band chooses to allow it! Also it encourages good performance musicianship which is, in my humble but elitist opinion, highly lacking in popular music these days.

Anyhow, here are the two internet preview singles. Don't Blame Yourself is their first work with a vocalist (Martina Sorbara) which I really like. I really hope this record breaks them 'cause other than doing good business it also crosses some musical boundaries.

I can't believe you used the word 'keys'. Any shred of hipster cred you may once have had is now missing. Been nice knowing ya, Brodie. :)

Should I have said "ivories" instead? Keys is a great umbrella term for piano, harpsichord, harmonium, polysynth, midi controller for your DSP hive or whathaveyou.

Just giving you a hard time, Brodie. It's just that keys is... well, jazz, somehow. Nothing wrong with it.

Oh, and supersize me. Thank you.

A night with the deal is always a good night out! I'd be at the Toronto gig if I could. Hopefully they'll tour europe and I can see them in an empty club or something. Hmmmmm...

I'm sure you'll have a blast!

I liked the sound of "gone, gone, gone" (reminds me of FischerSpooner and Daft Punk), but I think "Don't blame yourself" would have to grow on me. I did like the vocals for "Don't blame yourself"
