I can't remember the name of the group, but a few years ago I saw a story on TV about some girl group who had built all their own instruments, and the main one they used was a xylophone that they built to trigger midi events. Seems like I remember they had also added foot pedals to be able to change what types of events the xylophone triggered. I'm sure that if you did some research and had the technical know how you could build a midi tambourine or cowbell. After a quickie Google search, I found this website, http://www.synthzone.com/miditech.htm, and I'm sure there are tons more. You could search the newsgroups too.
