Nfotxn's Guide to Food & Drugs: Amsterdam
Dec. 2nd, 2003 07:01 pmI suppose I should recall Amsterdam, shouldn't I? The problem is that I'm not sure I can. And it was not the drugs as there were few. I was really adament about not being an observer and just live a little. I'm pretty sick of the weblogger mentality of being third party to your own life.
To me Amsterdam really was like Disneyland for adults, that is to say Disneyland although entirely authentic. You can get drunk, laid, high or drunk, laid and high or just really fucking high. But that really didn't seem like my primary purpose for the trip, although definitely a very large secondary one. Just being immersed in a culture with a strong sense of civic duty while still being exceptionally tolerant was a trip itself. Also that lovely high density urban buzz that I've not often experienced outside of certain neighbourhoods in North American cities is present through-out the entire city.
Of note were the two exceptionally awesome meals we had. Not that there was really any question, but
cpratt and
danlmarmot have exceptional taste. First night was Hemelse Modder which was "European ecclectic". Nice understated minimal atmosphere, which is hard to do. I had the duck special which apparently came with buckshot. Unfortuantely I just ate my bullets however
gusmacroy found two bits in his. I was so jealous that I poured his poppers down the drain and replaced them with an extra bottle of Logis de France bubblebath I had in my toilettries case.
Following awesome meal was at Indrapura for some rijstaffel action. I'm very down with Indonesian food however the soup appertiser was just way too spicy. Holy shit, my nose was running. It definitely set the mood for the rest of the meal which was otherwise fantastic. You see I'm one of those people who gets somewhat emotionally upset from hot foods. I think it's post-trauma from often being fooled at family events with spicy things. Regardless it was fun and the atmosphere was again classy but not camp.
Now on to the leatherbars! They were all really cute but generally not unlike the Canadian ones I've been too. I mean aside from being a tad smaller a bit more dingier. So I guess in leatherbar terms they were better. Whatever beer I was drinking all weekend was really good. I'll be darned if I can remember what it was.
I didn't really have enough time to get all psychedelic and infact only smoked one joint the whole time. I think my return trip will have more sitar and guitar hits than the past one now that I know the landscape better. And there will be a next time, a flight is only like £80 return!
