Highschool Meme. For the record Highschool was the worst time of my life. My step Dad left, my absent biological father arrived, I moved twice and I came out of the closet in the period of about 3 years. I got depressed and dropped out in the spring of 1999, I believe. Try again the following year, kept screwing up until I came out. At which point all my friends had moved on in life, further compounding the problem. But I digress...

I was a typical teenaged mess.

School and Year you graduated

Westdale Secondary School, 2000 (didn't graduate)

Nickname in high school?

Just "Brode" most of the time.

Sport you were into?

I really liked volleyball, track and weight lifting in Phys. Ed. class mostly. I didn't do any extra-cirricular stuff because I was too indie/arty/pretentious. Plus I was always hella busy with rehearsals, performances etc. Although some people I know managed too do both, most of which had an extra parent.

When I was really big (320lbs big) the football coach was always trying to recruit me. Unfortunately I avoided much organized sports in High School and all the teenaged homo-erotica and the formative experiences that result from them. In retrospect the majority of my apprehension actually stemmed from fear of my sexuality.

Had a circle of friends?

Definitely. I would say we were the slightly pretentious elite geeks. The type who read Wired or Shift, lusted after gadgets, drank fancy coffee and talked at length about starting out own indie online comic book company. We were so 90s.

Best subject?

Music, because I hardly had to try aside from theory. I got credits for playing pieces I'd played years ago with people I played with outside of school. It was great. Although our teacher had a bit of an inferiority complex and suffered a nervous breakdown once. Not because we were snotty but life stress. Seeing her break year after year still disturbs me to this day although at the time I was a bit more oblivious. She's ok now, I've seen her at annual public school strings concerts.

A close second was computer programming class. It rocked because we were all so driven to succeed and were always trying to out-pace eachother.

Worst subject?

Probably Chemistry and English. Chemistry because the material didn't stick in my mind too well despite studying. And English because I had a crazy feminist teacher named Mrs. Cook-Petz. I kid you not.

A teacher you owe life lessons to?

My History teacher who helped me not to be affraid of politics and helped to explain how much of the legislative system in Ottawa actually works in practice as opposed to out of a text book. He was good... if only I could remember his name.

Describe in one word...

Freshman year: Panic stricken but exciting.
Sophomore year: Lazy
Junior year: Stressful
Senior year: Depressed

Your best friend was?

Probably Paul Niklis. He still is really, although our lives have gone in seperate directions.

Worst friend?

Nobody I can remember or is worth remembering.

Cafeteria food sucked?

Oh god yes. And yet I still ate it.

Wore uniforms?

Nope, but they kept threatening to.

How was the prom?

Apparently it was very nice. Preppy as fuck though. Lotas rich kids went to Westdale.

Who were the prom king and queen?

I remember they were very pretty. I can't remember who though.

Any achievements?

Chronic under-achievement aside from very specific areas.

Were you popular?

Recently it's become apparent to me that I was much more popular then I believed myself to be at the time! I had a mutable exterior that fluctuated from bitterly sardonic to shiny and optimistic that covered up my crushing feelings of isolation and guilt.

Best song that reminds you of high school?

Treble Charger - Red

sorry, but I basically latched on to your chemistry comment. I am suffering incredible amounts of stress because I can study chemistry one day and do the problems correctly. I come back to them the next day and redo them completely wrong. I am horrible frightened of failing my chem 2 class. In Chem 1 I did more poorly than I have done in a class since going back to college. It just doesn't stick :( and i need some of this stuff for the lab work I would like to do throughout grad school and life. ergh. so frustrating!

Nickname in high school?
shall we be reminded of Mrs. Edworthy ;)

Your best friend was?
I could fly over there and kiss you right now. As for the different directions in life *sigh* alas it is sad but true. I honestly wish things could be like they were when it was the old Yarmouth and Ewen Rd times. They were really good. I really don't like the distance now, but as long as you remain in my heart, as I in yours then i know we will continue to be the best of friends forever! Hey your still on as my best man at my wedding (the eventual one thats coming). We still have to plan yours.

Cafeteria food sucked?
Hey it got better in the last year

How was the prom?
Shit aside from getting box'd in the washroom

Who were the prom king and queen?
If my memory serves me correctly we didnt have one

that's all my input for now... time to go help the *computer chalanged*

it wasn't that bad...

brody, brody, brody. we all loved you, and you're right, you were more popular (lack of a better/more appropriate word) than you can imagine. we didn't have prom, but formal. no kings/queens either.
all in all, i'm pretty sure it was one of those learning experiences for all of us...were you there for my most embarrasing moment (in retrospect of course) for the student council elections assembly?? if not, i will not attempt to inform you. westdale was great for all us crazy types, myself included of course. kisses! barb
