What baffles me is George W Bush's lack of respect for the legal process. He believes that "judges insist on forcing their arbitrary will upon the people, the only alternative left to the people would be the constitutional process."

If that isn't facism I don't know what is. Now fascism is one of those widely abused words but incase you're not sure as to the exact definition I've provided it below for you:
A system of government marked by centralization of authority under a dictator, stringent socioeconomic controls, suppression of the opposition through terror and censorship, and typically a policy of belligerent nationalism and racism.
I really like to reserve words like this for when it matters. I would say this is one of those times.

But fret not my dearest American friends. Take this an opportunity to paint yourself in vibrant colours on the canvas of life. There is nothing more romantic than fighting for your right to love freely and be recognized equally for it, no expections. It's at the core of all our being.

This should be easy.

He wasn't complaining when the judges forced their arbitrary will on the people to elect him president.

And now he's the champion of the will of the majority speaking for america.

The irony makes my teeth hurt.

Well, we've known for a long while now just how much respect Bush has had for the judiciary.

Just ask the detainees at Guantanomo Bay.

Yes, a president with a profound dis-respect for one of the pillars of a free society. That's really good.

This should be easy

Should be easy, but we're dealing with Bush. And really, he IS the one just installing judges he favours while no one else is around to do anything about it ... so, are THOSE judges exempt from said condemnation? Honestly ...

lot of dynamics going on here...

I have a hunch if this proposed ammendent gets to the states, it will pass the 2/3 requirements. Then the question becomes: who's the facist?

The system? The American political system? The public at large?

Despite our community's strong feelings on this subject, remember: most polls show an mixed bag of feelings on gay right issues in this country. While many American's support "gay rights," the waters get much murky on gay marriages. And it just reflects what I see in the gay community on this topic.

Will be an interesting couple of months; exciting times no doubt.

Hats off to you Brodie. Your post was right on target and I'm glad to see how you put it together so well. People always stop short of calling Bush a fascist because of its close association with Hitler. It's about time we call a spade a spade.

While I completely agree with [livejournal.com profile] dizzibear about the irony of Bush's apparent flip-flop concerning the validity of court rulings (Hypocrisy, anyone?), I also agree that the word fascism is widely abused, and in this case it isn't truly accurate.

Now...perhaps Bush has that *mindset* or that's his dream or something...maybe he's a fascist at heart - but this isn't a fascist country. It's not a fascist system. He still has to contend with the populace and the courts and the congress. Hence, no fascism in effect, not really. Too quote Martha (the soon-to-be jailbird): "And that's a *good* thing."

Words like "radical" and "Nazi" and "fascist" and "deviant" are all so very loaded, and almost never truly accurate when used in political debate or even just BS-ing, and I think they just inflame an already irritated and swollen social discourse when misused.

Well, there's my $0.02. My first comment on your LJ, and I'm already stirring up trouble. I hope you read my journal enough to expect this sort of thing! LOL! Oh, yeah - Hi Brodie, nice to "meet" ya.
