Hey, I need suggestions for a good web host. As much fun as newelement is (and free!) the server they're on is like this gi-normous vhost with like 3000 different domains hosted. Meaning they're slow to update stuff (php 3.0.16 :P). I used to be with csoft on their BSD box ("smoke", man the admins were such pot heads) but it kept going down (with no warning, explanation or reimbursement might I add). So if anyone knows of a non-extortionate host running some form on of UNIX (freebsd or linux preferably) apache, php4, mysql with an EXCELLENT track record, please tell me.
Otherwise I have this idea that's been bouncing around in my head for a while. A host co-op. The idea is to make an agreement with some people to go splits on a co-located box (like with rackspace or something) and share it equally. The idea seems like a good one, although it seems to me that all the co-opers will have to be pretty savvy technically. Also begs the question if all will have root or who will be root. What happens if dude's perl log analyzer takes down the box? Anyhow, that's the idea. I know a good five or so people who are interested already. If I could get shares of the co-location down to about $40-50USD/month each I would be more than happy.

aside from being reasonably priced and run by smart people, it's not a totally automated business ... which means that, within reason, they'll let smart people do reasonable things.
