I must say that having written regularly in a journal for close to five years has preserved whatever english skills with which I left school. I might even go as far as to say that it's improved them in certain ways. My spelling and grammar still sucks out loud but my desire and passion to express myself coherently and accessibly has only grown a great deal.

That's probalby some part of the reason I've been journaling since 2000. Certainly a good reason.

I see Loretta Lynn wrote a song about Portland? This I must hear.

So, you've had the same phenomenon happen to you then? I'm now VERY aware of words I butcher in spelling and the like ^^;;;

Yes. English classes were always a favourite of mine. Easy( "I speak English!"), and more fun and practical than Math.

And yet, between my English and my table manners, there's been a steady decline since living as an adult, away from family.

me too! mee tew!

What prompted me to start a LJ was similiar to yours: I wanted to get my writing skills up to par. I waited a lot longer after school though: 15 years. I started to work in a private shipyard as a blue collar grunt. No need to write at all really in the job. So my skills and language went shitty pretty fast. Kinda scary.

I'm flattered and humbled when I get positive feedback about my writing from people though. I don't think of myself as a decent writer. Yet.

*hugs stud man*

P.S. Visit New York City you hot hot hot hot man you :)
