Geeze, I had no clue how much I depended on absorb.org for new music hints. And I hate to be another drip parroting pitchforkmedia or The Wire. I think a website with mostly informational reviews would be really great. I am sick of partisanship and really just looking to relax in general. Be it in music, politics or how I take my coffee.

Thanks! I used to Photoshop layer blending kung-fu to preserve the sharpness of the image when it's scaled down to miniscule Livejournal icon size.

yeh, absorb was great. i used to talk to sheikh ahmed occasionally online and he was a pretty cool personage.
i loved the fact they'd give an otherwise "critically acclaimed" record a negative review simply to be contrarian, and vice versa (i think their review of 'confield' by autechre was the only positive review of that record i can remember reading)
i loved how they fucking HATED team doyobi with incalculable fervour.
the last time i talked to him, he said they were going to do some documentaries for channel 4 in the UK, im not sure if that's still the plan but if it is then that'll be very nice indeed.
i think he mentioned getting a printed magazine together too, which will also be nice now that jockey slut has died.. there seems to be a general lack of alternative music media which isn't up it's own arse (wire, richdork) or is just exceptionally trendy and N. O. W.!11!!!11 (uh.. jockey slut towards the end, most music magazines)
methinks i see an unexploited niche market..

It's as if people are looking for a One True Opinion on every record. Nobody can agree to disagree. Indiesnobs are so passionate when they get hateful that the result is too intense to really understand. Relaxed, agenda free music journalism would be so nice. With lots of background and factual bits about the artists and their music. I guess these are more symptoms of the failure of the profession of journalism. As the artform becomes more democratic in it's ability to publish work there are more and more unqualified opinions out there. Weblogs are not entirely a good thing.

yeah i agree, it's hardly a new idea but i really do think a lot of the time it does come down to making advertisers - and the target audience - happy.. i've found increasingly that i get recommendations for new artists through talking to people on slsk (one guy is even going to send me a cassette copy of a release by the band centipede), and to an extent through listening to late-night radio (although that hasn't happened in a while... oh john peel :( ).. i suppose the combination of hearing the actual music, and then if you're interested, going to check out their website and read up on them, kind of fulfills one of the roles of music journalism.. or something like that

I've been using slsk way less since I got a Mac. Solarseek and Nicotine both... oh what is the word.. SUCK.

ah yeah, i used nicotine for about a month once i got my powerbook, it worked alright but it just got annoying in the end. solarseek is a joke, though the next version might be better. currently i have slsk running on my PC and i access it using a VNC client.. which works well only as long as you have a spare PC lying around..
there's another client that's being developed by a person in the mac users room on slsk called soulseex, which is still being beta tested, but seems like it's going to be much better than the mac clients currently available..

Yeah, I was VNC'ing to my PC for a while. But it was kinda slow even over ethernet. Looks like there's quite a few slsk clients for Mac that are a good 50% there.

I agree. Although print media is crosscut by many agendas, it still has a legitimating effect to it, more so than web media I think. I don't know if this is because it takes a concerted effort to produce, or that there is a higher level of accountability with print media, but I have always put more stock in opinions that are embedded in ink. Unfortunately, I can't find a magazine that takes a comprehensive and balanced look at indie music. Any suggestions?

I've done that a few times. Sometimes you get some good pictures that way. Other times, well that what they have delete for on the digital camera.
