A while ago in Ontario it was Take Your Kid To Work Day. And for some reason that I cannot explain I was given the responsibility of mentoring a child of an employee of ours. I didn't think much of really. Although I tried my hardest to keep him involved and told the customers of his vocation that day as to spare him some yelling. Despite many of my gays thinking otherwise I can't help but really like kids. I know growing up as a boy without a father that any sort of positive experience with an older guy made me feel awesome. To be able to effect that great feeling of acceptance and recognition in other kids makes me really feel good.

Anyhow the mother of said child stopped me at my break to tell me what an effect I had on her son. That he thought I was "like so cool! Like that turtle from Finding Nemo!" which really made my day.

I generally get on pretty well with kids, too. I think that when I "don't like" a kid, especially a young one, it's really their parents that I don't care for.

Bright, enthusiastic, happy kids give me a real feeling of hope that the world might not continue to suck forever.

Maybe the kid thought you were 150 years old like the turtle? *ducking*

In all seriousness, it's those little moments that can really make one's week. To top it off, you left an impressionable mind with an undoubtedly positive influence that just might help shape his life later on.

Hey, I know I hit curmudgeon-hood early but I'm only 22!

I'm glad whenever I can make an impression like this. It certainly ain't often.

That is awesome.

Kids are really great. I love working, and singing and playing music and dancing with them at school.

I must admit on my days off I like to spend time with adults. I usually get home and start talking really fast with Greg because, well kids are great but you really don't have adult conversations usually with them.

But yeah, kids are awesome.

Yeah, I've spent many days immersed in kids for music. And by the idea of the day they're aren't so awesome. You just want some peace and quiet and talk about sex or politics or something adult.

One of the best things anybody can do is provide a feeling that was never shown to them. In this case you created something totally new. Not influenced by the way you were raised, but by what your kindness told you was right.

I guess in some way you may have given yourself what you never had by giving this kid what he needed at the time.

I had a similar experience at work as well. One of our QA people brought her son in to work, and took him around to each group in the company. I was fortunate enough to explain to him what Implementation did. The next day she came back and said, "My son liked your job the best."

YEAH! ;)

It's a GREAT program.

It's so awesome that he thought you were cool! I'm not generally fond of children, but I love how close I am to my niece.

I'm not fond of all kids either. But a few rotten apples don't spoil the whole bunch.

That is so great ! cool kid ! I guess is always uncomplicated yo take care of a kid for a couple of hours or days, but maybe a long-term thing may be hard to deal with.
