I still don't like Belinda Stronach. She's a rich woman who uses both her class and femininity to great effect. However I don't think her work has done much but raise her profile. I also don't think it's appropriate when Conservative MPs call her a "whore".
There's a possibility her switching teams will save us from a Conservative government. I will perhaps respect her more then. But it's impossible to really quantify that when all is said and done.
I have little time to absorb much on LJ anymore. Living in real life and trying to stretch out everywhere. Which is more fun than it sounds like, really.

Particularly the bit where Pierre Burton gives a tutorial on how to roll a joint. This happened just after legalized possession. He died soon after, quite a legacy.

Date: 2005-05-18 11:45 pm (UTC)I'm sure she felt squeezed out a bit and it got to her. Problem is, people would have a lot more respect for her if she went Independant, at least until the next round of elections after this. By doing a complete 180 and getting a job in the opposing party (which other people loyal to the Libs have likely been waiting for the chance to get) she's pissed off a lot of people. I'm sure that'll catch up to her.
Aside from that, i'm sooooo happy she's done this. The only hope Stephen Harper HAD in Ontario depended on Belinda. I can't think of anyone else in that party that Ontarians would even THINK of touching. Harper powertrips on her, and she totally fucks over his party. Right on. :D
Oh and poor Peter Mackay. What a tool. The coffee company i worked for actually had this guy and his entourage in one afternoon. I got the chance to talk to him for a few minutes, and thankfully that was it. I was tempted to tell all of them that day how much money this "homo" made his company. No more weekend golf trips around the country for you Mr Mackay, not without those billions behind your ass.

Date: 2005-05-18 11:13 pm (UTC)I don't think there's anybody in politics I hate more than Belinda Stronach. She's not as big a name as Bush, but if I'm going on about how much I hate bush and you mentions Stronach, I'm tottaly trumped. She is both the epitomy of selling image (sexual or otherwise) in politics in this country and the epitomy of right wing politics sleeping with powerful privite industry - an ironic combination to say the least.
And yet.... here we are in a situation that both saves us from a capital C conservative government, and a situation where the NDP can now prop up the liberal government. In other words: the absolute best situation that can reasonably be expected for left wing politics in Canada.
Strange bedfellows to say the least. We're talking quadrouple irony here.

Date: 2005-05-18 11:50 pm (UTC)BUT, she WAS one of 4 Conservative MPs who had the guts to break party ranks to vote in favour of the gay marriage bill.
And she may end up being the key that will stave off dissolution of Parliament long enough for the bill to pass.
It really galls me to hear all the sputtering from the Conservatives, calling her a whore and a "scheming opportunist" and "unprincipled".
Those comments sound incredibly hypocritical coming from people like Stephen Harper and his ilk, who have decided to join forces with a party whose stated ambition is the break-up of Canada. Harper has no chance of winning enough seats to form a majority government, but an election right now WILL strengthen the power of the Bloc Quebecois in Parliament. How can Harper claim that is good for Canada or reflects the policy of the Conservatives?
All it will do is possibly make him Prime Minister for what will likely be a very, very short period of time.
Yet, he and his colleagues have the nerve to brand Belinda Stronach an opportunist.
Indeed, she is. But what a case of the pot calling the kettle black!
