Today at 945AM was my assessment at school to find out what I need to finish my high school diploma.

For the newly initiated I dropped out of high school when I was about 18 and never really found the motivation to return and finish. I had a lot of stuff to deal with at the time. Forcibly moving out of the home I grew up in, having my Dad return after 15 years of absence and coming out of the proverbial closet were the major points of difficulty. Standard stupid gay teen stuff. I think I handled it well.

So I am at the office, early for my appointment waiting around with lots of people trying to get into ESL classes. I am suddenly feeling VERY privileged. I wait around for like an hour and finally see a councillor last minute before their lunch meeting.

Up until this point I am fully expecting two years or so of school in order to finish and be eligible for university. I would never have guessed that I will be ready to go to college by June. She awarded me 8 "maturity credits" because at 23 it's assumed I probably have learnt a whole buncha stuff.

Perhaps :)

So come September I will likely have picked a school to go to and will be preparing to move out of my Mom's house. That might be looking a bit too far in the future. But I've finally got a break and I'm just so excited to carry on with life.

I have too much potential to be working in a grocery store much longer. It's so nice to see some progress, a roadmap illuminated.

Yeah, I know what you mean. As I had some progress today myself.

Right on. You are too damned smart to be working in a grocery store. I'm glad they moved you up; your writing skills are excellent. You can study math et al in college. Any idea where you'll be applying?

Well I have to go into a college university preparation course to start with. That basically means community college for a while. Then I will apply for the degree program I want.

I'm particularly interested in Journalism at Ryerson University. However there are lots of possibilities. I can pay closer attention to them now.

That's what community college is for. A lot of them do a damned good job of it. I'm so glad you're moving forward.

Welcome

Welcome to the world of grown ups. Soon you'll be falling asleep in class and cramming away the night before a test. Sooner still you'll be looking back on that fondly and falling asleep at your desk wondering where the last 20 years went. Or maybe you'll be doing something really cool. It's all wide open. The nice thing about going to college at 24 will be the fact that you'll have so much more focus than do most kids at 18.

Yeah, going to school as an "adult" is something of a fringe perk I think. I've got all the drink-until-you-puke out of me (mostly) and really excited to get started making a future.

Excellent!

I'm assuming with wanting to go to Ryerson for Journalism, you want to stay in Toronto as it's familiar territory, close to friends, family, etc... Would you ever consider going farther away?

I've already done the Far Away thing. I'm ready to establish myself somewhere for a bit.

They really should just give you a university degree, too. You seem a hell of a lot more educated than most grad students.

You've fully been short changed on maturity points.

Also it is easier...

to get in to Uni as a mature student, I went back to Guelph for my second degree at 23 and age was a consideration in acceptance. I would go and talk to an academic counclr at the school you plan to attend before doing any college prep work. Journalism eh? Don't forget Carlton, of course Im not sure you could pull off the all black required to attend, LOL.

If I were you BF, I would tell you how proud I am... but since I am NOT your BF... I will congratulate you on making a good move... Keep it up and remember... the sky's the limit.

Congratulations. Like others have said, now you have a chance to continue your education. Before you know it, it will be like you were never delayed from undertaking higher learning.

Slick!
