Rose's Plan
Jan. 12th, 2006 07:49 pmI absolutely love the new job. I mean I am still treading water and trying to absorb the obscene amount of material that is being thrown at me. But instead of selling groceries I am involved in the maintenance of a collection of information pertaining to a topic I love: the city I live in.
Has anyone else ever realized something that should have been obvious from the onset? This happened to me today, something pretty large. See, I'm pretty passionate about my city. It has a long history as an underdog, sorta ravaged since the 1960s economically and just starting to get back on an upswing in the early 21st century.
I wouldn't have this job if it weren't for a tip from my friend Rose. I tell you she is one of the smartest people I know. When we see white light she sees a spectrum. Anyhow I didn't realize until I really started working on the job that Special Collections and the archives for the Hamilton Central Library is of course mostly to do with topics about Hamilton.
Um, duh?
I even honestly did the interview talking about how I was involved in activism and so interested in the city, the large crop of publications regarding it etc. Completely obliviously without targeting my responses.
So all along it was Rose's plan to get me into the job knowing it was involving something I'm passionate about. Most of our patrons are local writers, journalists, researchers and activists. I was actually recognized from my blog by one local art supply shop owner.
It's a good job, so far.
