You could probably do a shitty one with a consumer digital camera. I dunno, the gradients are too perfect. It looks like a 3D video game to me.

Brilliant observation. They're sort of interesting when done well... but I think I've seen maybe 5 that qualified.

I just think it's funny that there are so many amateurs with DSLR's that are thinking "DSLR+Flickr+HDR = Success!". I think it could be argued that it's the new Photoshop lens flare too.

The best ones remind me of Maxfield Parrish or NC Wyeth illustrations.
Right now it's so technology-driven. I have hopes that it will eventually be used for art.
