I may be totally gayed out for this band right now. They convey such a great feeling.

The spooky thing is that the rest of the record is good. Produced by Dave Fridmann of Flaming Lips fame

You do not know how many times I played this song. I bought the 12" yesterday and I think I've already worn it down.

I've been listening this album over the past week or so. My feeling is similar to my "Of Montreal" reaction: I'll be getting into it and then I'll hear a really 80's-sounding break and I'll cringe and then I'll get into it again. Again, that's smile/smile/cringe/smile.

I also like that one of the guys looks like Shane from The L Word.

Except, you know, he's more feminine.

Nobody thinks twice about cripping licks from 60s and 70s rock. But the 80s are off limits because they're distinctive. I think it's because that was the decade the boomers found out they were getting old and decided it wasn't their music.

Glad you like 'em! I'm really jazzed about MGMT right now.

But you and your Rhapsody! I cannot stand sharecropping music.

Dude you'll be all svelte for Coachella and some young beautiful thing rocking out to MGMT will be all "TAKE ME NOW IN THE PORT-O-LETTE" while they play "Kids".

Cool bio on their website

40 years after The Summer of Love (and 30 years after The Summer of Hate), MGMT is celebrating the grand re-opening of the third eye of the world with Oracular Spectacular, the duo's much-anticipated first full-length album, an enigmatic and prophetic collection of hallucinatory sounds and hook-riddled pop tones for the new millennium. MGMT is: Andrew Vanwyngarden and Ben Goldwasser, two psychic pilgrims whose paths first intersected in the green pastures of Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut, circa 2002. "We weren't trying to start a band," Ben remembers. "We were just hanging out, showing each other music that we liked." Andrew and Ben realized that -- despite their opposing views on methodology (one is spontaneously practical, the other is practically spontaneous) -- they shared a common love of mystic paganism (ironic indeed on a campus named for the founder of Methodism), psychotropic sounds, and the belief that a joke (or a joke song) could be sad, profound, and funny at the same time.

The video is very 1970s. The song material is very 1970s. The music itself is very electronic-pop.

It's a very confusing mix of style and emotion around which I'm still trying to wrap my head. ;)

But the video isn't totally 70s. It's got some giant LoLcats cats and WoW flying beasts as well as Michael Gondry style repetition a la his video for "Let Forever By" by The Chemical Brothers. All that tracking of the layers is probably done in Motion for Final Cut by Apple too. So technically, not artistically speaking, it's really very much a 21st century product.
