No joke. With the increasing difficulty treating resistant bacteria with antibiotics a new fecal transplant therapy has shown more than 90% efficacy in treating resistant C. difficile infections. It works by re-colonizing the body with the culture from a healthy person that keeps the deadly bacterial in check.

Of course because people are squicked about poo it will be pharmaceuticalized and a course of pills containing the refined bacteria will cost $5000.

This was a potential solution I came across while researching Ulcerative colitis back during my first flare ups. One of the theories regarding it's cause was that it was an autoimmune reaction due to the intestines not having enough of the good stuff living inside them.

If I remember correctly, probiotics do not have 100% of the normal flora/fauna found in a healthy digestive system and in the worst cases a fecal transplant could be necessary to fill in the blanks.

Thankfully, some good probiotics were all I needed.

I knew healthy bowels helped keep parasites at bay, but didn't realize they helped fight against C. difficile as well. It totally makes sense if antibiotics can make cases of C. difficile many times worse.

Although they now also know that not all c.difficile infections are dire, or even a problem. I tested positive for it a couple of years ago, but it never was symptomatic of anything. So there's some other mechanism at play.
