I, Too

I, too, sing America
I am the dark brother.
They send me to eat in the kitchen
When company comes,
But I laugh
And eat well.
And grow strong.
Tomorrow,
I'll be at the table.
When company comes.
Nobody'll dare
Say to me,
"Eat in the kitchen"
Then.
Besides,
They'll see how beautiful I am
And be ashamed -
I, too, am American.

What happens to a dream deferred?
Does it dry up
like a raisin in the sun?
Or fester like a sore
And then run?
Does it stink like rotten meat?
Or crust and sugar over
like a syrupy sweet?
Maybe it just sags
like a heavy load.
Or does it explode?

Thank you for reminding me how much I love Langston Hughes! And what a perfect quote for this week.

Isn't it a lovely poem? So perfect. I nabbed it from a local editorialist whom I really dislike usually. He usually writes about tearing down our rad downtown and replacing it with big box stores. But today he dedicated his column to a black American poet. A lovely turn of face and inspiring on even a small local level.

Lovely. And it makes a point worthy of reminder right now.
